Eh, Singaporeans! Ever felt that warm fuzzy feeling when someone does something unexpectedly nice for you? It’s the best, right? These little acts of kindness, no matter how small, can really make a difference in our everyday lives. Let’s dive into some heartwarming stories and find out how we can spread more good vibes around Singapore.
Kindness: A Common Sight
- Singaporeans are known for their efficiency, but also for their willingness to help others, even strangers.
Was at a McDonald in city area, there was a foreigner couple who were confused about the shaker fry bags they were struggling with it. Sat next to them was a sg family. The dad saw it and offered to help them… Small act of kindness but I think saved the couple from feeling really aw
- From helping lost tourists to offering a seat on the MRT, these small gestures show the kampung spirit is still alive.
Last Nov./Dec. i was waiting for traffic light under the Sun, this kind aunty moved her umbrella over my head(i was taller than her), I’m a grown man with no sign of needing help, but she still helped me block the sun for that min, saying”still the same umbrella, covering one extra won’t cost anything”
- These acts often go unnoticed, but they contribute to a more positive and supportive society.
Challenges: Why We Hesitate
- Sometimes, we’re too busy or caught up in our own problems to notice someone in need.
sometime back there was this foreign worker who seemed pretty lost so we checked in on him and he told us that he need to go to police cantonment (we were at near fortune centre) so he asked us how to walk to police cantonment (he said that he tried asking many people but they either ignored or avoided him).
- Fear of being scammed or taken advantage of can also make us hesitant to offer help.
- The fast-paced, competitive environment in Singapore can sometimes make us less empathetic.
I was having lunch alone in the kopitiam when some aunty suddenly sat at my table… Then she told me that she was sitting at another table but moved when she saw an older man trying to stare up my skirt… she sat there to block his view and told me to be careful. really thankful for her
Actions: Spreading the Love
- Be more aware of your surroundings and look for opportunities to help others, even in small ways.
- Offer assistance to someone struggling with heavy bags, or give directions to a lost tourist.
When you’re on the mrt, and both seats to either side of you are empty, moving to allow a couple to sit together is a small act of kindness. Every time I’ve done this, they thank me on the way off the train. Genuinely see more gratitude from them vs when I give my seat to someone that “actually” needs it.
- A simple smile or a kind word can go a long way in brightening someone’s day.
Still fondly remember the lady who flagged the bus for me as I was (running) approaching after the door had closed 🥹
- Remember, even the smallest act of kindness can have a ripple effect and inspire others to pay it forward. Let’s make Singapore an even more gracious society, one kind act at a time!
