SG PC Gamers: 5090 Hype, DIY Rigs & Thermal Paste Showdown!

Eh, you know how it is in Singapore, right? Everyone’s always trying to get the best deal, especially when it comes to our PC setups. Whether you’re gaming in your HDB flat or working from home, having a good PC is like having good hawker food – essential! This post dives into the latest PC hardware buzz from the HardwareZone forums for January 2025, focusing on what Singaporeans are really talking about when it comes to building or upgrading their rigs.

What HWZ Insiders Are Saying

The HardwareZone forum is buzzing with discussions on the latest gear. Here’s what’s getting Singaporean PC enthusiasts all excited:

1. RTX 5090 Fever is Real: Everyone is waiting for the RTX 5090, but the pricing is a major concern. Forum users are already bracing for prices above $3500, with some even predicting $4000-$5000 after the local ‘cartel’ takes their cut. A user stated, “after cartel take their cut confirm 5090 4k-5k++”

2. B650 Boards are the Sweet Spot: Forget the B850! According to forum users, the B650 offers the best balance of features and price for most AM5 builds. One user advises, “just get any b650 with wifi6”, while another points out that “b850 offers very little upgrade over b650, not worth paying the premium for b850.”

3. Thermal Paste is a Serious Business: Singaporeans aren’t just slapping on any old paste. There’s intense debate on which thermal paste performs the best, with some users conducting their own tests. One user shared, “MX6 have better idle temp…however on normal operation the GX-14 is showing cooler temp compare MX6”

4. RAM Tuning is Key: Forget XMP, manual tuning is the way to go for optimal performance. Users are reporting significant gains by tweaking their RAM timings, especially with Hynix A-Die kits. One user noted, “the result lifted 15%-20% in CPU bottleneck scene compared to stock”

5. FE Cards? Where Got?: Singaporean gamers are frustrated by the lack of availability of Nvidia’s Founder Edition cards locally. Despite Singapore being a major market for Nvidia, FE cards remain elusive. One user pointed out, “You’d think that their 4th biggest trading partner by volume would get at least a shot at their FE models?”

What Singaporeans Can Do

So, what can you do to stay ahead of the curve in the Singaporean PC hardware scene?

1. Be Patient on the 5090: Don’t rush to buy the RTX 5090. Wait for prices to stabilize and for more reviews to come out. Consider if the performance uplift justifies the hefty price tag.

2. Go for a B650 Motherboard: Unless you have a very specific need, a good B650 motherboard with WiFi 6 is the best value for most AM5 builds. You can save money and still get excellent performance.

3. Experiment with Thermal Paste: Don’t just settle for the stock paste. Look into high-performance pastes and do some testing to find what works best for your setup.

4. Learn to Tune Your RAM: If you are willing to put in the time, manual RAM tuning can unlock significant performance gains. Hynix A-Die kits seem to be the best for this.

5. Consider AIB Cards: Since FE cards are hard to get, look into reputable AIB (Add-in Board) partners when buying a GPU. But be prepared to pay a premium. Consider open bench or large cases for future-proofing.

Latest Trends & Updates

Here’s what’s trending in the Singaporean PC hardware scene:

Nvidia RTX 5000 Series Launch: The Nvidia RTX 5000 series, including the highly anticipated 5090 and 5080, is expected to launch in February 2025. However, availability in Singapore is expected to be limited, with AIB cards becoming more readily available by March 2025.

GDDR7 Production Issues: A forum user speculates that GDDR7 production is a bottleneck for the 5090, which might explain the limited availability and higher prices. Full production is expected only after the Lunar New Year.

Local Warranty Woes: Some forum users are reporting that local distributors aren’t honouring warranties due to oxidation, which is unavoidable in Singapore’s climate. This is something to watch out for when making purchases.

b850 is a step down from b650e, and only mandates pcie gen5 nvme over b650 which some midrange b650s already offer. im also not convinced that the mandated pcie5 x16 gpu slot offered by b650e is worth the premium, since even the5090 loses barely any performance dropping to pcie4. suggest just skipping the headache searching for b650e/b850 and snagging b650 with pcie5 nvme while theyre still available

NightRaven49 (25 January 2025)

Yeah. If you can’t afford AC, you can’t afford a 5090.

hmm.. now you know liao.. so for future proving. best to just use open bench style, ar bo get the biggest case you can cater for your play work station. so that any size GPU or other component can whack in..
