Planning a trip across the Causeway? Worried about the exchange rate and hidden costs? Don’t worry, we got you covered, kiasu Singaporeans! Here’s how to save money and make the most of your next JB adventure, based on tips from our very own HardwareZone forum.

Beat the Exchange Rate

  • Use Revolut or Instarem for better rates. Forget money changers! Online platforms often offer more competitive exchange rates.

  • Look out for Arcade rates. Check around for the best possible rate before changing your money. Every little bit helps!

  • Consider opening a Malaysian bank account. If you’re a frequent visitor, this could save you a lot in the long run. CIMB is popular among Singaporeans due to its presence in both countries.

CIMB FTW I have CIMB SG & MY. The only con is CIMB SG only has 1 branch in SG which is in Raffles Place, but you probably only need to go down once, max twice. They are also open on Saturday 1/2 day 9am to 1pm for the weekday work folks.

Avoid Hidden Charges

  • ATM withdrawal fees can sting. Some overseas ATMs charge fees, so be aware of potential costs.
  • Card usage fees add up. Some cards have hidden charges.
  • Overseas bank fees exist. Always check for overseas bank fees.

Maximize Your Ringgit

  • Withdraw cash strategically. Use cards like YouTrip or Revolut to withdraw up to S$400 per month without fees.

I use Youtrip and Revolut both cards, for these cards, withdrawal under S$400/mth is free.

  • Look for promos on essentials. Score deals on necessities using platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

Did you know Eight can go down to as low as $5+ with promo of sorts? Simba to $7ish? Just have to look out for promos and/or use platforms like Shopee and Lazada.

  • Explore local eats. Forget fancy restaurants. Try the Taiwanese snacks at Highlands Hotel in Genting for an authentic and affordable experience.

Highlands Hotel near the Taiwanese snack store, open till very late (still open around 2am), maybe 24hrs?? I tried their rou-zao-mian (braised minced meat noodle), very Taiwanese old-school, same taste as the breakfast i got in the Taiwanese Army camp when I was in Skylight Exercise in the early 90s.

So there you have it! With these tips, you can enjoy your JB trip without breaking the bank. Remember to share your own money-saving hacks in the HardwareZone forums and help your fellow Singaporeans save a few precious dollars!
