Bolster FOMO? SG’s Sleeping Secret Revealed!

Eh, you also use bolster or not? If not, you’re missing out on a true Singaporean experience! It’s more than just a pillow; it’s practically a national symbol. But is it really a must-have for a good night’s sleep in our humid island nation?

SG Bolster Obsession: Real?

  • Bolsters are super common in Singaporean households.

I recently was having a dinner with bunch of friends and realised every single Singaporeans at the table uses a bolster pillow. I continue to survey people around me and nearly everyone uses one.

  • Many Singaporeans have grown up with bolsters since childhood.

Alot ppl have it in SG because most parents will let their infant/kids sleep with something similar to a bolster/pillow. Those kids grow up to think bolsters are normal to have.

  • It’s not just a Singapore thing; other countries like Malaysia also have high bolster usage.

Over 80% of Singaporean households likely have at least one bolster. Some even say bolsters are for comfort and security, like a hug when you sleep alone.

Bolster Blues: The Real Struggle

  • Feeling pressured to conform to bolster usage.

Sleep also must adhere to peer pressure? Just do whatever you’re comfortable with.

  • The struggle of finding a suitable bolster when overseas.

When I went to angmo country for uni I was legit distressed for the first couple of months cause I couldn’t get a bolster. Had to buy another pillow to hug until parents visited me for xmas and brought my bolster over lol

  • Space constraints in small HDB flats.

Having too many pillows and bolsters can take up precious bed space, especially in our tiny Singaporean bedrooms. Some question if it’s really necessary, considering our already limited living space. Also, some people may feel left out if they don’t use one.

Sleep Soundly: Bolster Bliss

  • Just use if you want.

Just use if you want? Why are you pressured to use it, there’s no tribalism when it comes to bolster usage, nothing to feel left out on

  • Consider a bolster for better posture.

…I find using one helps with maintaining a good posture while sleeping.

  • Use a second pillow as a substitute.

If you’re not ready to fully commit, try using a second pillow as a bolster substitute. Ultimately, the best sleeping arrangement is the one that gives you the most comfortable and restful sleep. Don’t let FOMO dictate your bedtime routine!
